2022 Plant expansions in the Feed Industry

In 2022, several companies in the feed industry embarked on significant plant expansion projects to meet the increasing demand for feed products. In this article, we will take a closer look at the 2022 plant expansion of companies in the feed industry.

Introduction to 2022 expansion projects

One of the primary drivers of the plant expansion in the feed industry is the growing demand for animal protein products. With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, there is an urgent need to increase food production to meet the rising demand. This increase in demand for animal protein has resulted in an increase in demand for feed products, which has spurred companies in the feed industry to expand their production capacity.

In 2022, several companies in the feed industry announced significant plant expansion projects. Below are some of the most important ones we reported on at Kemiex to our customers during 2022.

1. Vitamin B3: Jiangxi Haiwen Biotech plans 10’000 t/a expansion

Jiangxi Haiwen Biotechnology Co., Ltd. plans a 10’000 t/a Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide/Niacinamide) and by-product 1’500 t/a Ammonium chloride expansion project in Xingguo County Economic Development Zone, Ganzhou city, Jiangxi province.

2. Vitamin C: NHU reports 50% more capacity

Heilongjiang NHU Biotechnology has increased its Vitamin C nameplate capacity to ~45’000 t/a, from about ~30’000 t/a reported earlier, and following its commercial launch of the product in 2020.

3. Vitamins: Dafeng Hegno’s technical renovation for Biotin, VB6 and VD3

Dafeng Haijianuo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (‘Hegno’) publicly announced an environmental impact assessment process for the transformation and renovation of 100 t/a Biotin and by-products 236 t/a Sodium bromide, 900 t/a Potassium chloride, 21 t/a Calcium carbonate, as well as 1’000 t/a Vitamin B6 and by-product 250 t/a Disodium hydrogen phosphate (DSP) and 60 t/a Vitamin D3 oil.

It is located in Dafeng Port Petrochemical New Material Industrial Park, Dafeng district, Yancheng city, northeastern Jiangsu province. In the same location, it conducts another project of 2’000 t/a Biotin 2% as well as 2’170 plus 330 t/a Vitamin D3 powder production and packaging.

4. Huaheng expands 200’000 t/a functional sugars, 4’000 t/a aminoacids

Bayannaoer Huaheng Biotechnology Co., Ltd. announced its first environmental assessment report for a ~US$ 7m investment in 210’000 t/a functional sugar (phase 1: 60’000 t/a) and 4’000 t/a refined amino acids project located in Shanba town, Bayannaoer, western Inner Mongolia province.

Other expansion plans include a 16’000 t/a amino acids chain project covering L-Valine (6’000 t/a), L-Leucine (5’000 t/a), L-Isoleucine (5’000 t/a) derivatives, by-product protein powder (2’880 t/a) and other (3’000 t/a).

A 7’000 t/a Beta-Alanine derivatives expansion project is located in Shuangfeng Industrial Zone, Hefei city, Anhui province with final completion in March 2023. Plans for further expansions include 50’000 t/a Succinic acid and 50’000 t/a Malic acid.

5. Vitamin B1: Brother starts renovating intermediates production

Jiangsu Brothers Vitamin Co., Ltd. invests more than US$ 4m in the technical and safety upgrade of its α-Acetylbutyrolactone (ABL) facilities in Dafeng Port Petrochemical New Material Industrial Park, Jiangsu province.

Construction is planned for one year with expected starting date in December 2022. It is anticipated that after finalisation, the overall capacity of previously 3’500 t/a ABL will be reduced to 1’635 t/a and only used for its own production of Vitamin B1, as well as the abandoning of a 1’000 t/a Beta-Alanine project.

6. Fufeng Biotech’s 500’000 t/a amino acids expansion and supporting projects

The Hulunbeier Ecological Environment Bureau province published an EI report for a 500’000 t/a amino acids and its supporting projects of Hulunbeier Northeast Fufeng Biotechnology Co., Ltd. located in Zhalantun city, Inner Mongolia province.

The scope of this project is reconstruction and expansion of the manufacturing facilities for 300’000 t/a (Mono-)Sodium glutamate (MSG), 200’000 t/a L-Lysine, 300’000 t/a synthetic Ammonia, 300’000 t/a Soda ash, 45’000 t/a bacterial protein and 22’000 t/a fertilizer.

7. Jiangxi Brother’s vitamin expansion projects in Pengze Industrial Park

Jiangxi Brothers Pharmaceutical just notified about a new expansion project in Jishan Industrial Zone, Pengze County Industrial Park, Jiangxi province.

The planned output will be: 100 t/a spices and 62 t/a vitamins and intermediates, of which 20 t/a Hydroquinone (Benzene-1,4-diol), 37.5 t/a 1,3-Benzodioxole, 15 t/a Piperonal (Heliotropin), 7.5 t/a Helional (Jasmonal), 10 t/a o-Ethoxyphenol, 10 t/a 4-tert-Butylcatechol, 7 t/a L-Carnitine, 2 t/a L-Carnitine tartrate, 2 t/a L-Carnitine Fumarate, 2 t/a Acetyl L-Carnitine Hydrochloride, 3 t/a D-phenylglycine, 2 t/a Benzeneacetic acid (L-Phenylglycine), 1 t/a D-Camphorsulfonic acid, 7 t/a Aminopropanol, 6 t/a Thiazole, 30 t/a 1-Naphthol (α-naphthol).

Other ongoing projects in three factory areas in the Jishan Industrial Zone are:
5’000 t/a Vitamin B5 (Calcium pantothenate), 3’000 t/a Beta-alanine, 13’000 t/a Vitamin B3, 10’000 t/a 3-Cyanopyridine (Nicotinonitrile), 20’000 t/a Quinone and 31’100 t/a Quinone derivatives; 13’000 t/a Vitamin B3, 3’000 t/a + 2’190 t/a spices and intermediates, 8 t/a raw materials, 1’500 t/a Vitamins and intermediates, 30’000 t/a natural spices, as well as a Phase 1 project of 8’000 t/a, and Phase 2, of another 8’000 t/a raw materials and intermediates.

8. Huaheng Biotech: 16’000 t/a amino acids project starts production

According to a company spokesman, Huaheng Biotech’s new fermentation base in Bayannur (Bayannaoer), Inner Mongolia, has initiated production as planned.

The initial plans of the 15’000 t/a L-Alanine and 10’000 t/a L-Valine production were altered in favor of a 16’000 t/a amino acids chain project covering L-Valine (6’000 t/a), L-Leucine (5’000 t/a), L-Isoleucine (5’000 t/a) derivatives, by-product protein powder (2’880 t/a) and other (3’000 t/a).

A 7’000 t/a Beta-Alanine derivatives expansion project is located in Shuangfeng Industrial Zone, Hefei city, Anhui province with final completion in March 2023. Plans for further expansions include 50’000 t/a Succinic acid and 50’000 t/a Malic acid.

9. DSM starts construction of large-scale Bovaer® production in Scotland

Royal DSM today began construction of a new manufacturing facility at its Dalry site in Scotland. The plant will substantially increase production capacity of Bovaer®, a methane-reducing feed additive.

Bovaer® is a feed additive that can achieve an average enteric methane reduction of -30% in dairy cows, and -45% in beef cattle, with some tests showing reductions of up to 90% according to the company. The product is in early commercialization phase in many countries around the world, including the EU/EEA, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Pakistan, Switzerland, Turkey and Uruguay.

10. Huachen Biochem starts trial runs for Vitamin B5, B1 and Beta-alanine

Shandong Huachen Biochemical Co., Ltd., a sister company of Shandong Hwatson Biochem, has completed Phase 1 of its vitamin base construction and is now starting trial production in December. Phase 1 consists of an investment of about ~USD 137m and facilities to manufacture Vitamin B5, Vitamin B1 and Beta-alanine (3-Aminopropanoic acid) loacted in Weifang Binhai E&T Zone, Shandong province.
